Most photographers let loose in Ireland go wild taking scenics. I only took a few, although the sheer intensity of the landscapes knocked me out. Most of what you'll see here are faces - and the majority of those are of Ireland's gypsies- sometimes called itinerants or tinkers. They call themselves The Traveling People, and they have a long, proud and private history.
I was struck by the character of the Traveler children, when I first encountered them begging on the Dublin streets. I poked around and found their encampments on the edge of town, began to photograph there, and was eventually befriended by them. Here's how they looked in the last days when they were still travelling in bow top wagons, in places like Ennis, Gort, Claregalway and Milltown Milbay.
