I first went to Memphis in 1971, driving a 1960 Ford truck with a homemade plywood camper on the back and a Jack of Diamonds painted on the driver's door. I went in hope of meeting my great hero, the Delta bluesman, Booker White.
I knew Booker lived in Memphis, though I didn't know where. I had the name of a local blues promoter, but when I arrived at his address, the house had been torn down. I was standing on the sidewalk, staring at the vacant lot, at a loss what to do next, when a young couple approached and asked if they could help. It turned out they knew not just Booker White, but Furry Lewis and Sleepy John Estes as well. They brought me to Furry Lewis' house on Mosby Avenue that night, the next day I went to meet Booker White on my own.
I'd grown up listening to Furry Lewis sing "Stack O' Lee" and "Judge Harsh Blues" on an old Brunswick 78. But I wasn't prepared for the wise cracking 80 year old with one leg who played a ragged bottleneck guitar and could make chills run down your spine with his raw singing. Furry kept open house, I spent a lot of time there studying his playing.
